Disney Casts Singer Halle Bailey as Ariel
If you ask me who my favorite Disney princess is, it has always been The Little Mermaid. I was introduced to Ariel as a little girl but her essence has followed me throughout my adult life. Yes it's cheesy but it's true. When in doubt, be a mermaid right? With all of these Disney films being turned into live-action features, my fingers have been crossed for a perfect casting with The Little Mermaid.
Melissa McCarthy, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay were already slated to lend their voices for the film that begins production in 2020 and now we know who our beautiful Ariel will be...
"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said director Rob Marshall in a statement about the casting of Halle
Halle Bailey is 19 years old and first came on the scene as half of singing duo Chloe x Halle with her sister. Recently, audiences have been able to watch her and Chloe weekly as costars of the "Blackish"spinoff series, "Grownish".
Ron Clements and John Musker were behind the animated 1989 original "The Little Mermaid", which won best original song and score Oscars for Alan Menken. For the new production, Menken will team with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music.
I love this casting so far and I truly believe Halle was a great choice! I can picture her bright red locs already!
